Evan Whelchel
Coach Whelchel is the Managing Director for LaxAcademy and is entering his fourth season as the Head Coach of the Westlake High School Lacrosse Club. In 2012 he was part of a team that reached new heights in winning the first District Title at Westlake in 20+ years and set a team record for number of wins and post season award winners. His team’s outstanding season lead Coach Whelchel to be selected as the 2012 US Lacrosse Texas High School Coach of the Year.
From 2003 to 2005, Evan was head coach at St. Michael's Academy. After two great seasons at St. Michael's Coach Whelchel was selected to be the full-time varsity assistant coach at Division III Virginia Wesleyan College.
After a successful season at Virginia Wesleyan, Evan returned to Austin where he took over the Westwood Lacrosse Program and served as their Head Coach for three winning seasons. Evan has also served as the Head Coach of the Trilogy Elite Select team for two years, ATX Elite Select Team for one year and Team Texas Fall Select.
Along with Coaching at Westlake, Coach Whelchel currently serves as a founding member and Co-Head Coach of Team Austin and sits on the All-American Selection Committee for the State of Texas.
As a player he attended St. Mary's Hall where he served as team captain for three years, MVP for two years and All-state for his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. In his senior season, Evan led St. Mary's Hall to their first Texas State Championship appearance. Upon graduation he attended Franklin and Marshall and played as a midfielder on their varsity squad.

Tom Keaton
Tom Keaton is beginning his 2nd year at Westlake High School and is the varsity D2 Head Coach and is also a coach in the Westlake youth lacrosse program. In his first year as a Head Coach for the Chaps Junior Varsity, he fielded the youngest squad in the State of Texas and dominated all competition going undefeated in Central Texas finishing with a regular season record of 12-4.
Coach Keaton joined the Westlake coaching staff as a player and student of the game for over 30 years and several years coaching at the high school and youth level. He played his college lacrosse as a goalie at Hope College during the regular season and with the University of Michigan team during the summers. He continued playing after college and during his military career in Detroit and Upstate New York.
Tom is a certified US Lacrosse coach and a Positive Coaching Alliance © double goal coach. As a retired US Army Ranger, he brings a focus on fundamentals, discipline, and teamwork with the ultimate goal of developing champions in life and on the field.

Matt Malcolm
Coach Malcolm is a 3rd year coach at Westlake High School and was also a part of last year’s District Champion Chaps team. He has been coaching in the Austin area for the past five years coaching various youth and select teams, including five years with Team ATX.
Matt played his high School Lacrosse locally at Bowie High School where he earned All-State honors twice. He attended Texas State University and continued his successful Lacrosse career as a 4-year starting attackman and captain. Matt achieved many honors with the Bobcats including MCLA All-American, 2x Lonestar Alliance MVP, 4x LSA All-Conference selection, and 2007 LSA Rookie of the year.
Coach Malcolm finished his time at Texas State with 204 goals and 279 total points in just 60 career games (4.65 points per game). He shattered both the Texas State and Lonestar Alliance scoring records, and currently sits 5th in all-time MCLA scoring.

John (JJ) Jackson
John Jackson is a Midfielder and Club President at the University of Texas and is entering his third season as a player for the Longhorns. In 2012 he helped the Longhorns win their second straight conference title, earning the team yet another trip to the MCLA Championships. His performance on the field earned John a selection as a 1st Team All-Conference Midfielder.
From 2006-2010 John was an attackman on the Westlake High School Varsity Squad, switching to midfield as a senior. During his high school career John was selected to the All-District team his sophomore and junior seasons. A two-time team captain, his senior season, he was given All-State Honors as a midfielder and named the team’s MVP while leading the Chaps to the playoffs. He played on a number of select teams during his high school career as well, including the ATX LaxBats, USA Starz U-21 World Team, and West Coast Starz.
John has served as a youth lacrosse coach in Austin since he was a sophomore in high school. In the summer of 2008 he served as the ATX LaxBats 8th Grade B-Team Head Coach and has continued to assist ATX teams during the summer. John has served as an assistant coach for multiple seasons in the Westlake Youth Program, helping an 8th grade squad to a league championship during his senior year in High School.
John is currently running the wall-ball sessions on Saturday mornings for the Westlake Youth Lacrosse Program and teaches privately around town when he isn’t on the field for the Longhorns.
